International plastic bag free day celebrations by Utkarsh!
In a world where ‘periods’ is wrapped under stigma and shame, a day such as Menstrual Hygiene Day is much relevant. Through Utkarsh-Nirali Scheme, we strive to bring the topic of menstruation through discussion, awareness and eco-friendly and safe hygiene practices. We need to destigmatise periods, so we can ensure better health for our mothers, sisters, friends, partners, wives and all the women who make our lives better!
Please listen to what the young student Vikas Pawar (NMMC Secondary School, Vashi Gaon, Navi Mumbai) has to say about menstruation. Often, at homes, boys and men are kept out of any talks or incidents related to periods. It is considered dirty and embarrassing. It is high time boys and men are roped in to help manage menstruation. Most of them have women in their life, their mothers, sisters, partners, wives, daughters, friends, colleagues, etc. When men are educated about menstruation, it creates empathy, encourages communication and ensures compassion. They will be able to help women in their life or around them to overcome the challenges of taboos, stigma and ignorance regarding periods.
The video shows that there are many questions women and girls have regarding menstruation and hygiene practices. While Utkarsh-Nirali Scheme organized in schools and colleges answers queries from students, there are many who do not have anyone to turn to for getting scientific answers to their doubts and questions. So, Utkarsh has launched a menstruation helpline 1800-212-3269 available 24X7, where anyone can call and present their questions on menstrual health. The answers will be provided by experienced gynecologists and team.
To spread awareness about menstrual hygiene amongst adult women, we have an episodic programme ‘Let’s Talk Periods’ in which eminent gynaecologist Dr. Shruti Thar talks about various issues around periods including hygiene measures, vaginal disorders, hormonal imbalances, menopause, women’s health and more. It’s sad but true that a majority of adult women in India do not have any knowledge about the physiology of menstruation. Neither are they aware about proper hygiene measures. Worst of it all, they don’t even have anyone to talk to about their problems. The result is infections, infertility and even cancers in future.
Please listen to what Dr. Shree Lasya Kakarla of D. Y. Patil Medical College, Nerul has to say about the importance of menstrual health. Menstrual health refers to both physical and mental health during menstruation. Good physical health is access to proper hygienic measures including safe sanitary napkins, time and space to remain clean and also getting to change sanitary napkins every 4 hours. Mental health is not putting pressure on women and girls and keeping secluded, but they should be allowed to lead a normal and dignified life. Unhygienic menstrual practices can lead to yeast and urinary tract infections, reproductive tract issues and even Hepatitis B and cervical cancer. Let’s talk about menstrual health, shall we?
Please watch the video to hear the feedback of teachers and students on Utkarsh-Nirali Sanitary Pads. They are from NMMC School 36, Koparkhairane, Navi Mumbai. Please listen to two young and bright students as they share their thoughts on menstruation. Ms. Kesar Katkari and Ms. Ujwala Lokhande are students of NMMC Secondary School, Aakroli, New Mumbai. Earlier women were asked to take rest during periods so they could get some reprieve from the hard labour they had to do on other days. Now, blind beliefs and taboos have taken their place, forcing women to ‘disappear’ on these days. Menstruation is a normal process, as digestion and circulation. There is nothing shameful about it and as Ujwala says, it is a blessing to humankind!
We are happy to share that for this whole week, we will be posting valuable information on menstruation, hygiene management, taboos and more. Please share these nuggets with friends so periods is no more a shame! In this video, watch what Ms. Shubangi Gowre, a teacher with Late. Bolanath R. Patil Vidyalaya, Turbha Gaon has to say why menstruation awareness is essential.More awareness, there will be less fear, more focus on maintaining menstrual health through proper hygiene practices, less stigma and shame and it will help our girls be more confident.

Menopause and its related health issues are a major concern for women. In the video, eminent gynecologist Dr. Shruti Thar talks about ways to treat and overcome the issues.
Please watch the video to see the exemplary initiative by Utkarsh. As you all know, Utkarsh has initiated a free school bus service for the students of Mulund Rotary School for the deaf. The bus service is proving to be a great relief for the parents as they find it safe and convenient for their children. With the bus service, we are confident that the children will be able to attend school regularly. We need your help in continuing the service and to start more such services so that every disabled child gets to attend school and complete their education.
In this session, Dr. Shruti Thar addresses a relevant and crucial topic on women’s menstrual health – menopause. It occurs usually after the age of 40 or after 45. Along with menopause, there could be hormonal changes, and it may also affect bones and body health. Some even may suffer from many ailments such as diabetes, thyroid problems, etc.
You can prevent many menopause-related issues by exercising regularly, going for walks, taking care of your diet and by yoga. Yoga can prove to be a great help in regulating hormonal fluctuations as well.
It is also important to take care of hygiene. Use an Indian toilet if possible. Many menopausal women face vaginal infections or dry vagina issue. Healthy diet can help prevent such problems to ga great extent. Another common issue is skin turning dry, appearance of wrinkles and skin losing elasticity. An active life, nutritious diet, avoiding junk food and taking care of skin can go a long way to keep your skin supple for a long time.
Dr. Thar also addressed some of the questions posed by viewers. One question was on home remedies to tackle period pain. Hot water massage, exercise, and a fruit and vegetable-based diet can help. Another question was on bleeding. It differs from person to person. In some cases, the periods may last for three days while for some, it may last for a week or so. If the bleeding is more than the usual and is accompanied by thick clots of blood with giddiness, then it is best to consult a gynecologist. A sonography may be essential to probe the reasons. What is to be considered abnormal is when your period duration and blood flow suddenly shows a change. For example, if you have had four days of period and suddenly, the period lasts only for two days, then it may not be normal. Whenever in doubt, seek a doctor’s advice immediately.
Hope you found the video informative. Our next session will cover more points on menstruation. Please like, share and subscribe our videos so more and more get access to the valuable information.

Welcome to yet another episode of ‘Let’s talk Periods!’. In this episode, Dr. Shruti Thar addresses the issue of period pains. It is normal to have abdominal pain during menstruation and it varies from person to person. Changing food habits and bringing about lifestyle changes can help relieve pain in some cases. Exercise for 30-45 minutes regularly as it can also lend relief. Try to eat a healthy and nutritious meal. There could be many underlying causes of severe pain such as fibroids, polyps or endometriosis. Thyroid problem or high blood sugar level can also cause menstrual pain. If the pain persists and turns bad, seek the advice of a gynecologist as soon as possible. It is possible to treat period pains. If untreated, it could lead to further complications and even end up in infertility. Kindly post your feedback and questions if any in the comments section and we will try to address them in our upcoming episodes. Also do not forget to share, like and subscribe to our YouTube Channel.

Please watch the video to listen to what Dr. T. G. Srinivasan Ji, Health Education Officer, Greater Chennai Corporation, has to say about our increasing plastic use. The plastic bags and other items which we use and discard carelessly around, return to us in some way or the other. For example, animals, wild and domestic, especially cattle, eat plastic bags thinking it is food. Then, the components of these plastic items end up in the milk which you give to your children thinking it is healthy. Likewise, marine animals are dying in large numbers due to consumption of plastic. The delicious fish you eat also has plastic components in them. So, when will you stop using plastic?

Teacher Vayjayani Kul found the drive very useful as the girls were now confident of talking about menstruation and the issues they faced. “We appreciate the initiative by Utkarsh Global Foundation as there is scant awareness in society. The resusable Nirali Sanitary Pads are a huge help to the girls as most of them come from homes where they are unable to buy new pads every month. These pads are also environment-friendly. The session will help girls manage periods better and thus help their reproductive health,” says teacher Sangeeta. A. Ghadge. Dr. Meenakshi Biradar Ji from D. Y. Patil Medical College conducted the session.

She explained how it is a natural process and nothing to be ashamed about. Utkarsh, with a view to instill in the young girls the importance of awareness, asked them to draw an object first without looking at the paper and then with looking.
This made the girls realize that when they understand an issue wholly, be it about their studies or menstruation, they will be able to deal with it better.
It was a memorable experience for the girls, because no one had explained them about periods before.
On November 25, Utkarsh held yet menstruation hygiene management awareness at the NMMC School No-20, Belpaur Gaon, Navi Mumbai. Dr. Shree Lasya Kakarla from D. Y. The reusable pads could also save money for the families. One of the highlights of the session was ‘Drawing seeing and without’ wherein the girls were asked to draw a butterfly without seeing and later by seeing. This exercise helped the girls understand that they, themselves, are responsible for managing their hygiene during menstruation and that only when will speak out, there could be solutions to any of their problems. The exercise was fun and thought-provoking at the same time.
We hope every young girl in India will talk about menstruation as confidently as these smart girls in the video.

Watch the video to know more… Yes! There are many types of plastics and each come with some numbers and symbols which tell you if they are safe to use, whether they contain chemicals or not or if they can be recycled or not. Try this technique. Find the ‘Mobius Loop’ on the plastic container – it is the three looping arrows in clockwise direction. It is known as the ‘universal recycling symbol’. Look which number is mentioned inside the loop. If it is 2, 4, or 5, then they are safe to use and can be recycled. If the number is 3,6 or 7, they cannot be recycled and contain harmful chemicals posing danger to the environment as well as your health. If the loop has 1 written on it, it means they can be recycled only once. In India, we hardly know if the information on packaging or containers is true or not. It is best to use steel or any other metal containers to store food. Take away your child’s plastic tiffin boxes and replace them with steel tiffins. The latter may not look colorful but they won’t feed poison to your child. Let us all be responsible and reduce plastic use.

Rehan was in a #need of a hearing aid. His deafness was affecting his speech and therefore, chances of leading normal life too. Utkarsh provided him with a hearing aid. Now, he will be provided with further medical help to hear and speak normally.
The entire initiative was undertaken by our team member Santosh Padalkar who himself is a disabled person. This was the most powerful representation of 'day for disabled people' since a disabled person was empowered enough to help other people in need. One act at a time and the world will be a better place for all. On 29th March 2019 Rehan got admitted in Rotary School for Deaf. Just a couple of months ago, this wasn't a possibility because the Rehan's widow mother weren't able to afford transportation to school. Since the parents had to work, they too were unable to accompany them. Utkarsh has been working with disabled children for some time now and we have learnt that many disabled children are forced to discontinue their education as there is no help for drop and pickup. We are pleased to inform that Utkarsh will be providing transportation to Rehan and also a volunteer to take care of them during the journey. Please join us in wishing these lovely children the best for a happy and cheerful school year!!!
